To accompany my performance at Carrie Foulkes’ exhibition, Defence Mechanisms, at Avalon cafe, I made this saltwater ecosphere from my local stretch of beach on a day of high sewage warning.
As I was warned might happen (from Reddit) I accidentally collected a handful of living creatures along with the sand, which I believe were sand-hoppers – an amphipod. They functioned as the terrarium’s waste-disposal system and play an important role in cleaning our beaches.
My immediate thought when I first saw them was that I hope they die.
I lived with them for 4 days before my wish came true.
I then took them on a posthumous day trip to Westfield Stratford City before finally tipping the contents out in front of a Topp’s Tiles in Bermondsey.
